Do you like power pop?

If so, you might like my original music. You might also like my fellow bandmate Ed James' original music.

Outside of writing, recording, and performing music the most important thing to every musician is having people hear their music. I think this is true no matter who you are.

As an indie musician, no matter how good your music is, it's never going to get heavy, repetitive, rotation on a major radio station or music video channel. So from time to time I find myself thinking of how people can discover my music.

Personally, I don't like to buy a CD before I hear it, so I try to think of little things to get the word out.

Since May, when I self-released my CD, I've just about gone through about 200 copies. Most have sold and some have been given to family, friends, pop critics, radio DJs, and booking agents. I've also had a different song each month available for free download from my Web site and MySpace page. From January 2006 through April 2007 the whole album was on my Web site for free download.

First of all, if you've already purchased my CD I want to say a BIG thank you! It may seem like a small thing, but it's not. And it's not about the money either; it's the fact that it has value to you, enough so that you are willing to support it.

Second, if you've downloaded or listened to my music online, thank you as well! If you fall into this group I want to make it easier for you get my music for free.

Word of mouth has always been the indie musician's best friend and the Internet is his/hers modern-day tool.

With this in mind I'd like to try something, and this is where all of you come in.

Each month I'll randomly send someone who has either left a comment in my Guestbook at my Web site (www.jamesdeem.com), or at my MySpace page (www.myspace.com/jamesdeem) a FREE copy of my CD.

So listen and comment and also tell your friends to listen and comment. There's always a different FREE MP3 download each month and just by leaving a comment you or a friend could get a FREE CD.

Oh, and if you want a better idea what "power pop" is, then visit:

Just a little update here and this is news I’m thrilled beyond words to announce!

Ed James, the phenomenal pop sensation himself, is going to be joining David Reber, Rob Reber, and myself for any and all upcoming gigs! Ed is a tremendous talent who has released 4 solo CDs since 1999 and also has been featured on many pop compilations and tribute albums. If you haven't done it already, check out his music at:

www.edjames.net
www.myspace.com/meetedjames

It all started when I asked Ed to fill in on guitar for a show that Rob couldn’t make and Ed actually accepted! It rained for that show, but Ed, David, and I had a blast playing together it seemed only natural to invite Ed to play our next gig and he actually accepted again!

We’ll be playing tomorrow at both the Fat Tire Music Fest at 1 PM and at RiverGate on South Tryon from 7-10 PM, so come out and see us if you can. Directions, venue info, and all future dates are posted on my Web site and MySpace page at www.myspace.com/jamesdeem.

Oh, and reviews are starting to trickle in on my CD that I released last month. I’m compiling them here, so check ‘em out!

May 14, 2007

I got some more great news that fellow pop musician Ed James will be playing with David Reber and I at our June 2nd show. Ed's a well-established singer/songwriter in the pop community and we both share almost identical music tastes. Not only in the music that we listen to, but also the style we both write in. In fact, I was talking to Jamie Hoover this morning and he told me that he sees Ed and I as a perfect combination. I know Ed and I are looking forward to it, I hope you are too!

Check out Ed's sites at:

Hey Everyone!

I just heard from Divakar Shukla at 106.5 The End here in Charlotte. It seems he'll be "spinning" one of my songs again on his radio show "90 Minutes" this evening sometime between 8:30-10:00 pm Eastern Time. You can listen on your radio or online at www.1065.com. He'll also be plugging my CD release event/live performances with David and Rob Reber this Friday, May 18th and Saturday, May 19th this weekend at Promenade on Providence from 7-10 pm both nights.

Listen if you can and also come out and see us next weekend!

Thanks,
James

UPDATE 5/14/07: For those of you interested, the song played was "It Stands to Reason."

May 8, 2007

James Deem - jamesdeem.comGreetings everyone!

If you're one of the few who have visited my site over the past year (all three of you), then you'll probably be stunned that I've written an update. Without going into great detail I'll try to sum up what's been going on over the past year or so.

Last year in January of 2006 my wife Michelle conspired with Jamie Hoover (my friend and producer) and surprised me by getting the album I'd recently finished recording mastered. She then gave it to me on our wedding anniversary.

Of course I was thrilled, so I immediately made the entire album available for download on my Web site for FREE. I also began selling advanced copies through my Web site and prepared to get it pressed on CD in late Spring/early Summer 2006. Jamie helped get the word out and four songs received airplay on a few different radio stations and I even sold a few advanced copies of the CD.

I put together a band featuring David Reber on drums and Rob Reber on guitar and we played a couple dates in May 2006.

On June 7, 2006 I fell and broke my left leg and we also found out around that time that Michelle was pregnant. So everything regarding the release of my album on CD got tabled for the time being.

The Reber brothers and I started practicing again last Fall when my leg was starting to feel better, and we kicked it into high gear this past Winter when I began getting us booked around Charlotte, NC for this Summer 2007.

This past February I had some photos taken by Ross Bennett for the album and Carl Etzel has designed the CD's artwork.

We're doing a release event/kickoff for the CD on Friday, May 18th and Saturday, May 19th at the Promenade on Providence (I-485 & Providence Rd.) here in Charlotte, NC from 7-10 p.m. each night.

In addition to my original material we'll be playing songs by artists popular in the:

  • 60s (The Beatles, The Kinks, Led Zeppelin, The Rolling Stones, and The Who);
  • 70s (Cheap Trick, Billy Joel, The Knack, The Police, and Ramones);
  • 80s (BoDeans, John Mellencamp, The Smithereens, Rick Springfield, Tommy Tutone, Stevie Ray Vaughan, and "Weird Al" Yankovic);
  • 90s and today (The Black Crowes, Fountains of Wayne, Green Day, Jet, and Weezer).

At this point we have a total of 11 separate performances booked around Charlotte, NC so come out and see us play if you can. All of our performances are outdoor, family-friendly venues with plenty of shopping, food, coffee, ice cream, and fun to be had!

Thanks to all of you for your support!

James
